01.26.11; Kings vs. Sharks

It was a playoff atmosphere at Staples Center. The Kings and Sharks entered the game at the bottom of the Pacific Division and desperate for 2 points. The first period featured incredible defense by both teams. There were only 14 combined shots on goal. It was a disciplined period as well, with the only penalty coming at the very end, an Interference call on Ryan Smyth at 19:56.

The second period was a defensive battle as well, until Smyth found the back of the net at 13:35. In true Kings fashion, they coughed up a gaol to Clowe just 1:46 later. And then they coughed up another after just 39 seconds! After 33 minutes of scoreless hockey, there were three goals in 2:28.

Ponikarovsky tied the game at 5:47 in the third period. There were no further goals that period. Overtime was scoreless, which lead to a shootout.

Kopitar, Johnson and Brown failed to score, but the Sharks were unable to do so as well, resulting in sudden death. Stoll managed to score and Clowe did not, so the Kings won by a score of 3 to 2. They enter the All Star break with 55 points.

Other notes from the game: It was Wayne Gretsky's 50th birthday! Wayne once scored 92 goals in a single season. Crazy. It was announced that Kopitar was selected for his second All Star Team. Awesome!
